Many times a question is popped in front of us and that “What do you want to do when you grow up?” Some want to become a doctor, engineer or a businessman while there are some who want to make a career in Government. There is no dearth of Government jobs in India. One can go for defense services, Banking, Education, Civil services, Law and order enforcement and so many more departments are there. But if you want to make a career in Government jobs, be aware that the Age limit for all the Government jobs in India is different.

Age limit is the first and foremost condition of eligibility for no matter what is the preferred domain. It is important for the applicants to know about the age limit and relaxation at the very beginning. Also, the candidate’s knowledge is tested in the competitive exams which are written as well as oral. The impact is visible in the final selection where the marks obtained are considered. Though with the age limit, the educational background is also taken into account but more on that later!

Age Criteria for Various Government Departments

  • Defense Services

For appearing in Defense Services, you have to go through entry exams such as NDA and CDS. The age limit for the exams of these two entries is 16.5 to 19 years and 19 to 24 years respectively. For Indian Military Academy and the Air Force Academy, the age limit is 19 years to 24 years however in Naval Academy the age limit is 19 years to 22 years and 19 years to 25 years in the Officer’s Training Academy. To make an entry in the defense through NCC, the person should be of19 years minimum and 25 years maximum. For Law Graduates, looking forward to making career with Army through the JAG entry, the age limit is 21 years to 27 years. And for University Entry Scheme, the minimum age limit is 19 years to 25 years maximum. For Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) the minimum age limit is 19 years and the maximum age limit is 23 years.

For Short Service Commission (SSC), Combined Graduate Level Exams with the Minimum age of 18 years and Maximum 27 years is considered. For Short Service Commission Combined higher secondary level exams, the minimum age required is 18 years and the Maximum limit is 27 years.

  • Civil Services

For appearing in Civil Services exams such as IAS, IFS or UPSC exams, the age limit is between 21 years to 30 years. For Indian Police Services, the age limit is 21 years to 35 years. For UPSC Engineering services Exams the age limit is 21 years to 30 years. There is a relaxation of 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST quota people and 10 years for people who are physically challenged. For the Indian Post & Telecommunication Accounts and Finance Service (IPTAFS), the minimum age limit should be 21 years and maximum should be 30 years. The upper limit relaxation is given to the SC/ST caste candidates by 5 years, OBC caste candidates by 3 years, defense personnel are given a relaxation up to 5 years and physically challenged candidates are given 10 years of relaxation.

  • Government Banks

If you are looking for jobs in Government Banks then there are two positions available. For Bank Clerk, the age limit is from 18 to 28 years. And for Bank PO the age limit is from 21 to 30 years. Apart from this, the following categories have a relaxation on the upper age limit. It is 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST Candidates and Ex-Servicemen, 9 years for widows and divorced women and 10 years for physically handicapped candidates.

  • IBPS – Regional Rural Banks

For the recruitment of Regional Rural banks, IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) conducts the Common written examination. The minimum age limit for the Officer level scale is 18 years and the maximum is 30 years. For Office assistant, the required age limit is from 18 years to 28 years. For Officer Level II scale the age limit if from 21 years to 32 years and for Level III is 21 years to 40 years.

  • IBPS – Specialist officer

For the recruitment of Specialist officers for the positions of Junior Management officer in Law, IT, Agriculture and Marketing, the IBPS SO examination is conducted with the age limit of minimum 20 years and 30 years is maximum.

  • Private Banks

For Private Banks, the age limit is there when applying for the job but they conduct their own tests and examinations for the people seeking jobs with them. Also, the above-mentioned relaxations are not appropriate for their process of recruitment.

  • Teaching Jobs

If you want to apply for teaching sector the minimum age requires is 21 years and the maximum is 35 years.

  • National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC)

To apply for Junior Research Fellow or lecturer job, the minimum age should be 19 years and Maximum should be 28 years. Relaxation for candidates belonging to OBC caste is 3 years and SC/ST Caste is up to 5 years. For Lecturers, there is no age limit and you can make as many attempts as you want.

  • Indian Railways

For the job in Railways, the minimum age limit is 18 years and the maximum is 30 years. Many categories have the upper age limit as 32 or 33 years so the candidate needs to check before applying.

  • Indian Postal Services

For appearing for the competitive examination of Indian Postal Service, the age limit is between 18 years to 27 years. Upper age limit is relaxed for OBC, SC/ST, Physically Challenged and Ex-servicemen by 3 years, 5 years, 10 years and 3 years respectively.

  • Gramin Daak Seva

The minimum age limit is 18 years and the maximum age limit is 40 years. The relaxation of 3 years is given to OBC caste candidates, 5 years for SC/ST Caste candidates and 10 years for physically challenged candidates.
